Appalachian Trail Community: Nelson County, Virginia

Experience the Sunrise Side of the Blue Ridge, from our mountains to the mighty James River. Hike in and enjoy your time with us -meeting our folks, picking up mail & restocking at Montebello or wearing yourself out at our wineries, breweries and eateries.  Relax. Nelson style.

45 miles of A.T. pass through our beautiful scenic county from the North Fork of the Piney River to Rockfish Gap.  The Trail is well maintained by the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club, The Old Dominion Appalachian Trail Club and The Tidewater Applachian Trail Club

In 2012 Nelson County became an A.T. Community. Our Advisory Committee is made up of volunteers (Trail Angels and friends of the Trail), County officials and a representative of each of the three A.T. Clubs. Our first celebration as an A.T. Community was held on National Trails Day, June 1, 2013. Trail supporters in Montebello set up at the Fish Hatchery to provide lunch for hikers and information about the Trail to visitors. Down the road at Devils Backbone Brewery hikers and the general public were invited to “everything outdoors” , a mix a vendors, exhibits, bike races, music, camping and beer.
